Set Dialup Connection

The Set Dialup Connection window defines how modem dialing scenarios are to be processed.  This window allows you to select the dialup connection definition that is to be used when modem dialing is required and to indicate how the modem dialing sequence is to be handled.

A device's dialup connection definitions are created using a procedure that is external to DPS PocketFlash™.  This window simply allows you to select which dialup connection definition is to be used by DPS PocketFlash™.

Dialup connection definitions are typically created for a device using the device's Connections Settings window.  The following describes the basic steps for defining a dialup connection on devices having the Pocket PC 2002 operating system.  The basic steps differ slightly for the Pocket PC 2003 and 2005 operating systems, but are similar.  Please refer to your device and modem documentation for specific instructions on how dialup connections are defined for your particular hardware.

• On the device, go to Start > Settings > Connections > Connections.
• In the middle of the Connections Settings window, tap on the Modify button under Work Settings.  The Work Settings window is displayed.
• The Work Settings window has four tabs at the bottom of the window titled General, Modem, VPN and Proxy Settings.  If the Modem tab is not already the active tab, tap on the Modem tab.
• In the middle of the Work Settings window is a list of existing connection definitions.  Tap on the New... entry.  The Make A New Connection window is displayed.
• Enter a name for the new connection.
• Select the modem that will be used by the connection.
• Select the connection baud rate that will be used by the modem.
• Tap on the Next button.
• Enter the country code, area code and phone number the connection will dial.
• Tap on the Next button.
• Tap on the Finish button.  The Work Settings window is once again displayed.
• The new connection definition now appears in the list of existing connections.
• Tap on the OK button in the upper right corner of the screen to exit the Work Settings window.

Any dialup connection definition that will be used in DPS PocketFlash™ must first be tested to verify that it functions correctly and so any logon values required for the connection can be entered and saved with the definition.  Note that the first time a connection definition is used in DPS PocketFlash™, you will be asked to reenter and resave the connection's logon values.  To test a connection definition, on the Connection Settings window simply select the desired definition from the dropdown list and tap on the Connect button.

Within DPS PocketFlash™, modem dialing occurs only when all of the following are true:

1. A connection with the synchronization server is required, either on the Synchronize With Server window or the Order Status Summary window.
2. No other type of network connection currently exists, such as an ActiveSync connection or a wireless LAN connection.
3. The Connection name on this windows contains a valid dialup connection selection.
4. The Dial when needed checkbox on this window is checked.

Data Fields

• Connection name
  Required.  Dropdown selection.
  Select the dialup connection that is to be used for modem dialing.
• Dial when needed
  Optional.  Checkbox.
  Tap on the checkbox to enable or disable modem dialing.  When checked, modem dialing is enabled.  When unchecked, modem dialing is disabled.
• Connect wait time
  Required.  Dropdown selection.
  Select the maximum number of seconds DPS PocketFlash™ is to wait for the dialing sequence to complete.
  • Beginning with version 3.00 of the application, this field is no longer used and has been disabled.  Due to changes in how dialup connections are established, the amount of wait time is now controlled by the operating system.
  • Several factors influence the total time required to establish dialup connections, such as CPU processor speed, modem hardware, phone line quality and the location being dialed into.

Actions

• Tap to save your entered dialup connection settings to the database.  A message is displayed when the save processing has finished.  You are then returned to the Functions Menu window.
• Tap if you have made entries and you wish to have the entries ignored.  You are then returned to the Functions Menu window.
