Synchronize With Server

The Synchronize With Server window establishes communication with the synchronization server and controls the transfer of data between the handheld device and the server.

During synchronization, user-specific and device-specific data is transmitted to and received from the sync server.  The sequence of events for a typical sync conversation includes the following steps:

1. Connect to server
2. Logon to server.
3. Send handheld customer changes.
4. Send handheld unsynchronized orders.
5. Receive server control updates.
6. Receive server customer updates.
7. Receive server product updates.
8. Receive server pricing updates.
9. Receive server stock status updates.
10. Disconnect from server.

While synchronizing, the Sync Status area, located in the lower portion of the window, displays progress status messages that indicate the sync step being processed.  Additionally, popup messages are displayed to highlight any problems that might occur and to indicate a completed sync.

A synchronization will not be permitted if unsynchronized orders exist in the device database:

1. AND the Set Printer Model window indicates that reports must be printed prior to sync,
2. AND the indicated reports have not been printed.

Data Fields

• User id
  Displays the logon user id that was entered and saved on the Set Logon User window.
  • In order to successfully logon to the sync server, the logon user id must match the id of a sales rep user on the server.
• Password
  Required.  20 characters max.
  Enter your assigned password, as defined by your sales rep user record on the server.  Passwords are case-sensitive.
  • Your entered password is retained only while you are within the sync function; it is not stored in a file or otherwise saved.  When you leave the sync function, your entered password is discarded and must be reentered the next time a connection with the server is required.
• Server
  Required.  40 characters max.
  Enter the sync server's URL (e.g. server.xyz.com) or IP address (e.g. 192.168.0.141).  After the first successful sync, this field is disabled so it cannot be inadvertently changed during subsequent syncs.  Use the Actions > Edit Server menubar action to reenable the field.
• Port
  Required.  10 characters max.
  Enter the sync server's port number (e.g. 10256).  After the first successful sync, this field is disabled so it cannot be inadvertently changed during subsequent syncs.  Use the Actions > Edit Port menubar action to reenable the field.
• Sync mode
  Required.  Dropdown selection.
  Select the type of synchronization to perform.  There are 3 choices:
  • Normal - Indicates that all sync steps are to be processed.  Any handheld customer changes and unsynchronized orders are first sent to the server and processed; after which any customer, product, pricing and stock status changes (adds, updates and deletes) are received and posted to the handheld database.
  • Orders Only - Indicates that only handheld customer changes and unsynchronized orders are to be sent to the server and processed. Customer, product, pricing and stock status changes are not processed.
  • Refresh Data - Indicates that data in the handheld database is to be refreshed with current data from the server.  Similar to a Normal sync, handheld customer changes and unsynchronized orders are first sent to the server and processed.  All customer, product, pricing and stock status records are then deleted from the handheld database and a current set of records is received from the server and posted to the database.

Actions

• Tap to begin the sync processing.
• Tap to return to the Functions Menu window.
• Tap to stop the sync processing.  This action is only available after a connection with the server has been successfully established.  Note that, depending on what the application is doing at the time cancel is selected, it may take a few seconds before the cancel is actually completed.
• Tap Actions > Set Dialup to go to the Set Dialup Connection window to verify or change your selected dialup connection.
• Tap Actions > Edit Server to change the value of the Server field.
• Tap Actions > Edit Port to change the value of the Port field.
